Who needs race cars when you have office chairs? Over the past three years, the small town of Bad Koenig-Zell, Germany comes alive with activity.  About a hundred people from all over the world come to Bad Koenig-Zell to compete in the Office Chair Racing Championship.

The course is approximately 185 yards, mostly downhill, with a few sneaky ramps thrown in to air born the racers.   The challenge is to complete the race with the fastest time and to finish it in one-piece.  Protective gear and helmets are a must as some of these chairs can get up to speeds of 22mph.  The contestants are allowed to customize their office chairs and make them as decorative as they want.  They are also allowed to add extra wheels.  However, it is strictly forbidden to add a motor.  All contestant chairs are inspected before the race begins.

Contestants compete for best chair design and fastest course time.  Prizes are more trivial.  It is more the notoriety and bragging rights at the water cooler that these contestants are after.

A study conducted by Dr. Jack Lewis, a British neuroscientist, found that workers that worked in an open concept office environment were 15% less productive than workers who had semi private or private office space.  The test was conducted by placing caps on workers to track and measure disruptions in brain waves.

Why did productivity decrease?  Noise pollution and lack of privacy were the two main causes for the low productivity.  Dr. Lewis stated “If you are just getting into some work and a phone goes off in the background it ruins what you are concentrating on.”  With no doors and wall dividers, sound can echo in a large room causing constant interruptions for the worker.  Also lack of privacy, had many workers feeling as though big brother was watching them.  The feeling of insecurity and constantly being on guard contributed to high stress and less productivity.

If you have an open concept office, do not worry.  You do not have to invest in building walls and more offices.  There is an inexpensive solution available to resolve these two issues. We would recommend investing in either tall bookcases or filing cabinets to help create a wall divider.  The bookcase and/or filing cabinet will not only provide additional office storage space, but also serve as a much needed privacy barrier between workers.  The bookcases will also cut down on sound volume. With this relatively affordable quick fix, your workers will be much happier and ultimately more productive.

If your conference room also functions as the office lunch room, it would be best to select chairs that will clean up nicely. Food and drink spills do happen from time to time within a lunch room, which is why fabric chairs will not work. If you spill food or drink on a fabric chair, removing the stains from chair will be difficult. The chair is going to look dirty and old.

Instead of fabric chairs, we would recommend using chairs that are upholstered in black leather.  Leather can be wiped clean removing food and drink.  We would recommend a mesh chair.  Mesh is stain resistant and extremely durable.  Both chairs are offered in high or mid back lengths. When selecting the right size conference table for your room, you will need to address to two important factors. How many people do I need to accommodate seating for around the table and how large is the conference room?

The rule of thumb for determining how many people can fit at a conference table is quite simple. Add one person for each foot. For example, a 10 ft conference table can accommodate 10 people. Four people can sit on either side of the table and then one person on each end of table.

Now that you have figured out the best size table to meet your seating needs, here comes the difficult part. Will the table fit in the room comfortably? You do not want a table that is too large for a space. How do you gage whether the table will fit comfortably? There is a trick to answer this question. Take the dimensions of the room. Then subtract the length of the table from room length. Also subtract the width of the table from room width. You want to have 6 feet of space between table edge and wall on all sides of table. If your dimensions are 6 ft or more than your table will fit very comfortably. If dimensions are 5 ft this should be okay for the space. However, if less than 5 ft you may wish to select either a round table or sacrifice seating and go with smaller table.

Buffet side tables are absolutely essential when designing a large conference room. Meetings with clients are quite often conducted over lunch. When entertaining clients within the office, it is important to have a buffet table to set up food, servicing utensils, napkins, and condiments. The buffet table will de-clutter usable work space on the conference table and keep messes to a minimum.

The buffet table is also great for setting up a coffee/tea station. Co-workers and clients alike will be able to enjoy a nice cup of coffee while in their meetings.

If you already have a conference table, check to see if there is a matching buffet table. Usually conference furniture is designed as a set with matching buffet table, filing cabinets, and presentation boards. This will eliminate the guess work of matching the right stain. If conference table does not have a matching buffet table, we recommend asking for stain samples of buffet tables you think might work. That way you can compare the stain sample against the table to see if the buffet table will work within your conference room.
